In June 2013 ElectroCell Technologies conducted a pilot test to evaluate the impact of BioElectric cell lysis technology on Thickened Waste Activated Sludge (TWAS) at the Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) in Hershey, PA.

The objective of this pilot was to determine if BioElectric treatment would break down TWAS into soluble and more bioavailable forms as a precursor to enhanced anaerobic digestion.

ElectroCell’s BioElectric technology uses precisely managed, low voltage electrical pulses to break down liquid wastes. It has been used for several years to destroy pathogens, stratify nutrients, settle solids and reduce odors in livestock manure and biosolids. Only low levels of electricity (less than 3 watts per gallon) are used. There are no chemicals or additives involved.

ElectroCell’s Bio-Electric technology has been used to significantly reduce nutrients, odor, and pathogens in livestock manure for several years. The objective of this pilot was to determine if similar results were achievable in biosolids. Trial results exceeded expectations. After treatment and settling, total phosphorus (P) was reduced by more than 80% and fecal coliform was reduced below laboratory detection limits.

ElectroCell Technologies has completed the development of our next generation (Gen II) mobile waste treatment platform. Gen II incorporates a wide range of design refinements based on several years of on-site waste treatment experience. It is larger, more efficient to operate, quieter and easier to maneuver and tow over the road. The updated platform includes greater fuel storage for up to seven days of continuous, unattended operation. The Bio-Electric treatment tubes have been re-positioned for easier set-up, cleaning, and take-down. Dedicated storage units for hoses, sampling instruments, and tools have been incorporated into the design. The 25-foot gooseneck trailer provides more equipment storage and easier access to all equipment. The Bio-Electric treatment control logic software has been upgraded for safer, more reliable operations Even flow metering has been improved on this model.

According to ElectroCell CEO Buzz Hoerr; “Treating liquid waste for several years for our livestock farm customers, and seeing exciting trial results at wastewater treatment and food processing plants, has given us valuable working experience.” We’ve translated that into a safer and much more functional working platform that cuts down set-up and tear-down times, as well as providing nearly twice the operating time between refueling. This will keep costs down for livestock customers and also make it easier for new trials at municipal and industrial sites.”

ElectroCell will produce all future mobile treatment machines on this Gen II platform, and make continuous upgrades to components as they become available. Our goal is to be the best new method available to reduce pathogens, odor and excess nutrients for the wide variety of corporations and organizations that are responsible for the management of liquid waste streams, all of whom are looking for an inexpensive and simpler solution today.

In May Electrocell was invited to present our technology and business plan to a prestigious group of investors from around the world at NYC Cleantech, an event sponsored by Hodson & Ross, a Clean technology investment advisory firm. We stressed that clean water is an imperative now and in the future, and showed how ElectroCell is already playing a key role in treating liquid waste streams in the enormous agriculture, wastewater treatment, and industrial sectors. The US produces trillions of gallons of liquid waste every year. Our patented Bio-Electric technology is an entirely new approach to treating liquid organic waste, using precisely managed electrical pulses to rupture organic cells and break down liquid waste faster and more efficiently than traditional methods.

The ElectroCell system acts as a biological accelerator, enhancing traditional treatment processes and making them much more efficient significantly reducing nutrients, odor and biological oxygen demand (BOD). The mobile treatment units can easily be added to existing waste treatment infrastructures to improve performance, capacity, and efficiency. ElectroCell allows the industry to reduce or avoid massive fixed infrastructure investments, and can even be used in distributed waste streams where logistical constraints have prevented cost-effective treatment until now. The response from the clean technology investment community was enthusiastic. ElectroCell will be raising its next round of equity in July to finance continued development in new markets that will benefit this game-changing technology

ElectroCell Technologies continues to take a leadership role in the development of the Chesapeake Bay nutrient credit trading program/plan, as a member of the workgroup which is bringing the states and EPA together to address the remediation of conditions in the Bay. The World Resources Institute (WRI), based in Washington DC, recently hosted a meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Nutrient Credit Workgroup. The five states which border the Bay have trading programs in various stages of development. Pennsylvania is the leader, with an open credit auction, through which ElectroCell has sold credits, making it the first technology company in the US to have sold quantified nutrient reductions in the form of monetized units. ElectroCell CEO Buzz Hoerr has 15 years of clean water advocacy experience as Chair of the Vermont Citizen Advisory Committee on the Future of Lake Champlain.

Mr. Hoerr addressed the recent WRI meeting on the subject of Best Management Practices, noting that BMP’s are an inconsistent method at best. BMP’s, including no-till cultivation, stream setbacks, and other passive actions, are important conservation tools. But under some circumstances, water overwhelms these passive methods. In 2010, for example, the Susquehanna Valley and other watersheds that feed the Chesapeake experienced twice the normal rainfall amounts, much of it in heavy, short-term pulses like Hurricane Irene.

The result is a multi-year influx of excess nutrients, which form an 85-mile long plume of sediment flowing into the Chesapeake Bay (pictured in green, above). According to Mr. Hoerr, relying on passive BMP’s and accounting for nutrient reductions based on theoretical models, not reality, will not solve the problem.Mr. Hoerr noted that ElectroCell treatments sequester nutrients in the bottom of pits and lagoons, and we measure those reductions in every tanker load spread on fields. One EPA regulator commented that the only way they can sleep at night is knowing the nutrients never got on the ground in the first place. It’s time for EPA, the Bay Foundation and other NGO’s to realize the old ways are not working. We need new methods that are truly accountable. This is the only way we’re going to solve this problem.

ElectroCell Technologies, Inc. received the prestigious Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for its work on Snavely Farms in Elizabethtown. The Governor’s Award highlights the best in environmental innovation and expertise in the Commonwealth. Those of us who care deeply about improving environmental quality applaud these organizations and individuals ElectroCell was given the award for work on Snavely Farms using our Bio-Electric mobile treatment, which treats hog manure in the farm’s storage lagoon. The system transforms hog manure into a more effective, biologically-active fertilizer that improves soil and crop health. Using treated manure significantly reduces odors even during land application. James Snavely, co-owner of a 100-acre family farm with his wife Paula, says the difference in my soils has been really amazing. Crops and soils are healthier, and my neighbors are much happier with me during spreading time!

In a recent trial, ElectroCell’s bio-electric treatment was able to successfully reduce fecal coliform in 300,000 gallons of municipal biosolids by over 95%. Our bio-electric treatment is able to bring biosolids to Class B or, in some cases, to Class A level without the expense and environmental impact of alkaline additives. Biosolids treatment typically requires expensive heat, composting or lime treatments to bring fecal coliform within regulatory limits.

In the case of liquid lime, the biosolids are brought to a Ph level of 12 during treatment. This effectively destroys fecal coliform, but the resulting high Ph material is not an ideal soil supplement. With ElectroCell’s bioelectric treatment, coliform is quickly and cost-effectively controlled, the land-applied odor is significantly reduced and the resulting material is a more plant and environmentally friendly fertilizer.
